The Split by Dimension feature allows you to divide a single transaction into multiple values within the same dimension level. This is particularly relevant if a cost needs to be allocated across, for example, several departments or projects.

How Dimension Splitting Works
When you split a transaction at a dimension level, you specify the percentage allocation for each individual value.
Example: Allocation at the Department Level
If an expense needs to be shared between 2 departments, enter the desired percentage allocation in the split box:
- Department A: 50%

Department B: 50%
When posting, the system will automatically split the transaction into three separate entries so that the cost is correctly charged in the accounting according to the specified percentage.
Important Rules and Limitations
To ensure correct posting, the following principles apply when using dimension splitting:

One Dimension Level per Transaction: As a general rule, splitting can only be done on one dimension level at a time for a single transaction.
- Mechanism: Even if your solution is configured to allow splitting on multiple different dimension levels in general, choosing to split on one dimension (e.g., Department) will exclude splitting on other dimensions (e.g., Project) for that specific transaction.
- Flexibility: However, you are free to choose to split by Department on one transaction and by Project on another transaction.
Exceptions and Special Configurations
There are certain accounting setups where the standard rules for dimension splitting are affected:
1. Dimension-Driven Chart of Accounts
If your financial structure uses a dimension-driven chart of accounts, you cannot split on the specific dimension level that controls the chart of accounts.
2. Dimension Dependency (Hierarchical Dimensions)
When dependencies are established between dimensions, splitting can only be performed at the lowest dimension level in the hierarchy.
- Example: If the Project Dimension (Dim2) is subject to and dependent on the selection in the Department Dimension (Dim1), it is only possible to split on the Project Dimension (Dim2).
